Description Bass hepcidin is a 21-residue antimicrobial peptide isolated from the gill of hybrid striped bass (Morone chrysops × Morone saxatilis) based on anti-E. coli activity; sequence GCRFCCNCCPNMSGCGVCCRF, containing eight cysteines forming four intramolecular disulfide bonds. Molecular formula C₈₆H₁₂₇N₂₉O₂₅S₉, MW 2255.69 Da. Bass hepcidin is a teleost member of the hepcidin family, highly homologous to human hepcidin-25, with a compact β-hairpin/cyclic structure and in vitro antibacterial activity against E. coli. Beyond innate immunity, fish hepcidins participate in iron homeostasis and antiviral responses. Bass hepcidin is a classic model for studying vertebrate hepcidin family evolution, dual antibacterial-iron-regulatory function, and fish innate immunity (PDB: 1S6W).
Structure type Linear 21-mer (8 Cys forming 4 disulfide bonds, hepcidin cyclic peptide)
Solubility Readily soluble in water, dilute acetic acid
Storage Powder -20°C, dry, protected from light

PEP-BHEPC Bass hepcidin with iron metabolism regulation and antibacterial activity Bass hepcidin is an iron-regulatory AMP synthesized in bass liver, cysteine-rich, forming a highly stable hairpin conformation via 4 disulfide bonds. As a hepcidin, it regulates systemic iron absorption and release to maintain iron homeostasis. It also exerts broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal activities via membrane disruption, serving as a model for studying fish innate immunity and iron-immune crosstalk.
