| Description | beta-defensin 1 (pig) (porcine beta-defensin 1, also known as pBD-1, DEFB1, TargetMol/Abbexa) is the founding member of the porcine beta-defensin family, constitutively and highly expressed primarily in porcine dorsal tongue mucosal epithelial cells. The mature peptide contains 41 amino acid residues with the sequence NIGNSVSCLRNKGVCMPGKCAPKMKQIGTCGMPQVKCCKRK, containing 6 conserved cysteine residues forming three disulfide bonds (Cys1-Cys5, Cys2-Cys4, Cys3-Cys6, i.e., Cys8-Cys36, Cys15-Cys33, Cys20-Cys37), constituting the characteristic beta-sheet conformation of beta-defensins. pBD-1 is a cationic peptide (net charge +7) that, after electrostatic binding to negatively charged components on the bacterial membrane surface (LPS, teichoic acid), inserts into the membrane lipid bilayer and forms pores leading to increased membrane permeability and cell death. pBD-1 exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including E. coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes, S. aureus and Bordetella pertussis, and also exhibits antifungal activity against Candida albicans. pBD-1 serves as a first-line defense in porcine respiratory, gastrointestinal and reproductive tract mucosal innate immunity, and is an important tool for studying livestock mucosal immunity and developing novel antimicrobial peptides. Widely used in AMP drug development, porcine innate immunity mechanism research, beta-defensin structure-activity relationship studies and livestock disease-resistant breeding research. |
